This incredibly detailed and quite simply awe-inspiring painting is an example of my new favorite art category: Capriccio. Essentially, works in this genre involve “architectural fantasy” – vast monoliths, crumbling facades, people meandering through their fantastic surroundings as if nothing’s new. It’s like fantasy and science fiction art before those concepts even existed. I’m thoroughly enamored.
