The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – Haiku Review

A round of applause!

Jackson got the pacing right

Three hours flies by…ish

A harder Hobbit

Bilbo leads, scowls, kills an orc

Maybe it’s the ring?

Kili snags spotlight

With a random love story

That feels out of place

With an elf, no less!

Was that in the book? Doubtful

An odd distraction

Some industry suit

Thought, “Kids love elf/dwarf action!”

“It’ll sell some toys!”

Same with Legolas

Shoehorned in purely for thrills

(I’ll admit – he’s rad)

Skillfull action scenes

River barrel chase made my

Heart feel light again

You sigh, “I’ve seen this

Same old fantasy fighting

Blurry and boring”

But give it a sec

And I think you’ll be surprised

I certainly was

Gandalf gets some too

Briefly. Makes such poor choices

For a wise wizard

“I’ll go fight Sauron”

Is probably the worst plan

You big gray dummy

Smaug is a fun word

Pronounced “smog” or “smawg” or “smauguh”

Repeat it out loud!

A dope dragon too

Enormous and erudite

Best part of the film

Movie’s final third

All battle in the mountain

A strong conclusion

Audience disliked

Abrupt cliffhanger ending

But I’m all for it

Who needs denouement?

Part three must be all action

It’ll keep me awake

    Denouement. Elegant.
